　何らかの原因で、心臓の右心室から肺へ向かう肺動脈の血圧が異常に高くなる病気です。通常、肺高血圧症は、生まれつきの心臓疾患や肺動脈への血栓が詰まる疾患、肺気腫などで起こります。

　しかし、そのような原因がはっきりしない原因不明の状態で、肺高血圧症状が現われるものを〔原発性肺高血圧症〕と呼びます。

　「原発性」という言葉は、「原因不明」という意味です。治療は困難で、発症から死亡までの期間が3年未満と予後が極めて悪いため、厚労省での特定疾患(難病)に指定されています。
